Even if you don't apply makeup, stepping outdoors with chapped lips is still a fashion faux pas. Peeled skin on your lips is also a big makeup problem as it is not something a generous amount of foundation, lip liner or lipstick can cover. Whatever makeup arsenal you attempt, never consider applying lip gloss over your peeled lips either as while it may seem glossy at the time; you lips are bound to crack even further and even more obviously in less than an hour. Cue the invention of the lip exfoliator, which is kind of like a face exfoliator, except that it is much gentler on your lips. Although it works pretty much the same, it is best to not use face exfoliation products on your lips. They are much coarser and harsher, where they may actually do more harm than good. The key is to find a great lip exfoliating product that suits you best. Read a couple of reviews before you buy one.
To apply the lip exfoliator, all you need to do is to squeeze out a drop of the product and gently rub it along your lips in a circular motion. Do not press down or rub hard as you could end up with raw, tender lips. The process should only take about five to ten seconds which should then be followed up by washing off the lip exfoliator with water. You can then proceed with washing the rest of your face and proceed to get ready for your day out.
Even if you already have perfectly smooth lips, it's still a good idea to apply the lip exfoliator twice a week as your lips could darken overtime due to lipstick application. Hence, in order to maintain the cherry tint of your lips, never skimp on applying the lip exfoliator in the mornings at least twice a day. You wouldn't want to overdo it and apply the product everyday either as constant usage of the lip exfoliator will cause your lips to become very tender. After all, what the lip exfoliator does is that it helps get rid of dead skin cells on your lips. If you frequently rub abrasive ingredients into your lips, pretty soon you'll be removing the live skin cells as well.
You can either make your own lip exfoliator from ingredients you already have in your kitchen, or you could also opt for pre-packaged products. Generally, a lip exfoliator does not have to be expensive to be effective, although the pricier brands may have extra features as well.
The fastest home remedy would be to apply Vaseline or Chap Stick on to your lips for a whole five minutes. This process will soften the dead skin on your lips, which then makes it much easier to remove. After the five minutes is up, simply wipe off the residue with a wet cloth and enjoy soft dead skin cell-free lips.
Another straight forward home remedy would be to brush your lips with a dry toothbrush. However, do not brush in multi-directions as your lips are made up of tender flesh. Stroke in a gentle downward motion until you feel that all the dead skin has been brushed off. Whichever quick fix you opt for, do remember to slather on some Chap Stick or lip balm on to your lips after that in order to maintain the suppleness of your lips. These home remedies are also not a good idea if your lips are already damaged enough to easily bleed. You should also only do this process once a month as it is pretty harsh on your lips.
A gentler way of exfoliating your lips would be to concoct your very own lip exfoliator made up of olive oil, honey and sugar. The olive oil and amino acids in honey is added due to its superior moisturizing capabilities whereas the sugar granules as well as the alpha hydroxyl acids contained in honey are great exfoliating agents. Stir one teaspoon of olive oil with one teaspoon of honey before you add in two teaspoons of white sugar. Once you have created a paste, apply the product on to dry lips before massaging the sugar scrub on your lips in a circular motion for about thirty seconds. After that, rinse with warm water and pat dry.
Alternatively, you could also pop by your local shopping mall and purchase a ready-made lip exfoliator product. We recommend the Kiss Me Lip Exfoliator by Philosophy which is great for fixing all your lip woes including wrinkling, irritation and dehydration. This sugar scrub also contains a delicious blend of mango, shea, cocoa butter, sunflower seed, olive, peppermint and sweet almond oils.
The folks at Philosophy have also designed the packaging of the lip exfoliator with ease of use in mind. The product comes in a tube and all you need to do is to squeeze the amount required directly to your lips. Because it comes in a tube, the sugar granules in this product is also not as coarse, which makes this a great product for those with sensitive skin. The addition of the peppermint oil also gives your lips a lingering minty fresh tingle and best of all; you will enjoy lips that are instantly smooth and supple.
